Where it All Started
The South Beach Diet was originally developed by world-renowned cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston to combat heart disease. But when Dr. Agatston observed that following the principles of South Beach allowed his patients to safely—and easily—lose weight, it became clear that this diet could also benefit those looking to slim down.

About the Diet

So let’s dive in. Here’s an overview of the brand new South Beach Diet:
Phase 1: 14-Day Body Reboot
This phase is designed to reset your body’s chemistry for rapid weight loss, reduce your cravings for sweet and starchy foods, and prepare your body for steady weight loss in Phase 2.
During these first two weeks, you’ll enjoy fast weight loss as you eat delicious South Beach Diet meals we provide. That’s right: We’ll send you 14 days of delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners all prepared with the nutritional parameters for Phase 1 in mind. With globally inspired meals (Chicken Fajita Bowl or Herb Roasted Turkey with Haricot Vert, anyone?!) and delicious, satisfying snacks (think Tropical Coconut Almond Bars and Beach Shack Shakes in all your favorite flavors), what’s not to love?
During these first two weeks, you’ll go lighter on carbs like fruit and whole grains, and will fill up on lean proteins (like eggs, fish and meats) and healthy fats like olive oil and nuts, which will keep you nourished and satisfied as you lose.
On Phase 1, each day you’ll add in:
- 3 lean protein servings (4 for men)
- 2 healthy fats (3 for men)
- 5 non-starchy vegetables
- At least 64 oz. of water

Phase 2: Steady Weight Loss

During Phase 2, you’ll also enjoy two “Practice Days” a week. On these days, you’ll try your hand preparing your own healthy meals with recipes we provide. We’re talking easy, fresh, delicious meals anyone can make (chefs and not-so-chefs alike). This will help you get the hang of healthy eating, and will prepare you for life after the South Beach Diet. In Phase 2, you’ll feel free to dine out with family and friends as part of your practice days. Just follow the food guidelines and portion sizes that are part of the core principles of the South Beach lifestyle. You’ll refer to your Phase 2 Daily Planner for help deciding what to eat and what to limit during this phase.
Phase 3: Weight Loss for Your New Healthy Life
Once you hit your target weight, you’re ready to transition to Phase 3. In this final phase, you’ll enjoy all foods in moderation. You’ll feel confident making good food choices anytime, anywhere (even eating out at your favorite restaurants or RSVPing “yes” to dinner parties and birthdays—nothing is off limits!). You’ll continue to embrace fitness and your new healthy lifestyle.
Phase 3 is all about taking this easy-to-follow plan and making it a part of the rest of your life.
